TORI MARTIN SPEARHEADS AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY FUNDRAISER IN CONJUNCTION WITH FASTRAK NORTHEAST ON MAY 28

By Mike Leone

March 9, 2011

(Hartford, OH)…Tori Martin has joined with FASTRAK Northeast to present the inaugural “Race for the Cure American Cancer Society Benefit Event will take place on Saturday, May 28 at Sharon Speedway as part of the already scheduled Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series event. The rain date will be Sunday, May 29.

The FASTRAK Northeast Touring Series will be making its first of four stops in 2011 at the Hartford, Ohio on May 28. The event will be part of the two-race Bill Emig Memorial “Wildcard Weekend with $1,500 to-win at both Sharon and Lernerville Speedway two days later. Not only will FASTRAK racers be competing for increased monies and the $1,000 point fund around the weekend, but also a “King of the Hill event has been added with $500 guaranteed to the winner!

Tori Martin is a junior at Punxsutawney High School in Pennsylvania and is the sister of FASTRAK racer Joe Martin- a Sharon winner in 2010 and also a Northeast Touring winner last August at Dog Hollow Speedway. The Martins lost their grandfather to cancer on Christmas Day 2008 and Tori decided that she wanted to do a benefit event for cancer as her senior project.

“Tori approached us recently about tying in a benefit cancer event to one our Touring events, explained fifth year Northeast Co-Director Mike Leone. “She wanted it to be a centrally located venue for everyone and on a night when additional fundraising activities events could take place without it interfering with the track’s planned program. The May 28 event worked well into Sharon’s schedule for that night as it was already a night focused on FASTRAK with it being Vicki Emig’s father’s memorial event and without one of Sharon’s regular divisions competing.

Martin’s goal is to raise several thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society through various fundraising efforts. Drivers will have the opportunity to race “In Memory of or “In Support of a loved one for a minimum of $25 with the possibility of adding associate sponsors for $10. All of the heat races, last chance races, and features will have the ability to be sponsored for $50, $50, and $100 respectively.

There will be several raffle items donated from drivers in the top eight seeded in FASTRAK and the proceeds from the night’s benefit raffle will go to the American Cancer Society. Other drivers will also have the ability to donate items for the Chinese Auction. Tori is looking for things such as driver apparel and other merchandise. Fans will also be able that night to donate directly to the American Cancer Society. Several other activities are also in the works and will be released in the coming weeks.

“This event has great potential and I’m really looking forward to spending the night mixing the sport we all love with supporting the American Cancer Society, said Tori Martin, creator of the Race for the Cure event. “My grandpa was one of my biggest supporters, and I know he would be so proud. More and more families are loosing loved ones due to cancer, and I feel that with this event, it gives the opportunity for the racing community to reach out and make a difference.

The “King of the Hill will feature the top eight drivers in the Northeast Touring Series points in addition to the top eight finishers in the May 28 feature. The 16 drivers will be seeded with the current Northeast Touring Series point leader taking on the eighth highest finisher in the feature that’s not in the top eight in points in round one. The overall winner will receive a minimum of $500 with positions second through fourth paying cash. Each race will be two laps with the final race consisting of five laps.

“Tori’s eagerness and determination to make this fundraiser a success is just another example of the talented youth, albeit in a different manner, that surrounds and supports FASTRAK Northeast, expressed fifth year Northeast Co-Director Vicki Emig. “We are very proud to join this concept with our Series on the Bill Emig Memorial Night at Sharon, and it could not be more appropriate as my father passed from cancer at the early age of just 54.

The various forms will be available on the websites of both www.fastraknortheast.com and www.sharonspeedway.com and also by clicking here. Drivers will also be e-mailed the form and will be available at the speedway. For additional information or ways you can get involve, contact Tori Martin at 814-952-9270.

Because Martin will be focusing primarily on the FASTRAK Late Model division, Debbie Burns-Polk has offered her services to help with the fundraising efforts for the Stock Cars, E-Mods, and Mini Stocks that will also be competing on May 28. Burns can be reached at 330-448-2349 (home) or 330-647-9419 (cell). Her e-mail is djcapolk@roadrunner.com.

“We have always wanted to do an American Cancer Society Night at Sharon Speedway, explained Sharon GM Dave Willoughby. “When Tori Martin and FASTRAK contacted us, I was 100% in favor of it and think we can make this a great night for everyone! I’m real excited about the King of the Hill as that will only add to our program.
