(Hartford, OH)…Rain showers washed out the features events Friday night at Sharon Speedway after all of the heat races were completed. Make-up features will be run in subsequent events thus rain checks will be void. It was the sixth straight week rain has been in the forecast for the “Friday Night Thunder programs.
After losing four of the first Friday night shows, Sharon Speedway made every attempt Friday to get the second program of the year in. Light showers began falling around 4 p.m. and continued until almost 5:30; however, the decision was made to go on with the program with clearing to the west and a favorable forecast for the rest of the night.
Skies did clear allowing the program to get underway; however, a band of thunderstorms formed just west of Cleveland and took a direct bull’s eye on Sharon Speedway just after the final heat race was completed and right before the Sportsman Dwarf Cars hit the speedway for their feature. Three make-up features will be run next Friday, May 13 with the remaining three on the next “Friday Night Thunder program.
Opening night winner Guy Griffin of Greenville, Pa. captured his second heat race win of the season in the Ti22 Performance Outlaw Sprint Warriors. The Summit Racing Equipment Econo Mods saw a season-high 14 cars in the pit area as Alan Dellinger (Hermitage, PA) and Todd Canter (Warren, OH) captured their first heat wins of the season.
In the Joe’s Radiator & Uni-Tech Frame Straightening Mod Lites, Jeff Teeters (Warren, OH) won his second heat race of the year, while Mark Marcucci (West Middlesex, PA) kept his perfect streak alive with his third heat race checkered flag. Joe Grzelak, Jr., who won the opener for the Uni-Tech Frame Straightening & Joe’s Radiator Sportsman Dwarf Cars, took the lone heat race event.
The Micro Sprints also had a season high car count with 13 on hand as D.J. Furney (Malvern, OH) and Tim Eakin, Sr. (Cortland, OH) picked up heat event scores. It was Furney’s second heat triumph, while it was the first for Eakin, who made his season debut. Ravenna, Ohio’s Chris Logan scored his first heat race win in the Mini Late Models
Sharon will be in action on Saturday (May 7) with “Steel Valley Thunder featuring the Governor Insurance Agency Big-Block Modifieds, Barris Supply FASTRAK Late Models, Ainsley 500 Heating & Cooling E-Mods, Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, and the Presidential Lawn Care Mini Stocks. Race time is 7 p.m. Fans in attendance on Friday can bring their rain checks for a $3 discount.
