Area Tracks Align to Revive Western PA Sprint Speedweek in 2021; Sharon to host round 4 on June 5

Shippenville, PA (Jan 19, 2021) – Owners and promoters of five local tracks within the Western Pennsylvania racing circuit have aligned to rekindle the formerly defunct Western PA Sprint Speedweek for the popular '410 Sprint Car' division this coming summer. Five straight nights of unsanctioned racing are slated to take place under the lights at Michael's Mercer Raceway (Mercer, PA), Thunder Mountain Speedway (Brookville, PA), Lernerville Speedway (Sarver, PA), Sharon Speedway (Hartford, OH) and Tri City Raceway Park (Franklin, PA).

Previously run under the All Star Circuit of Champions banner from 1993-2000, Western PA Sprint Speedweek has been on a 20-year hiatus while local speedways actively searched for a model that could prove successful for all tracks, drivers and fans involved. Call it perfect timing if you will, because the crop of talent found weekly in our Western PA '410 Sprint Car' fields is growing, and continues to improve each year. The revival of Western PA Sprint Speedweek is aimed at supplementing that growth, while also rewarding area tracks and sponsors for their continuing investment and support of local motor racing.

"The '410 Sprint Car' division in the local area has been through many ups-and-downs over the last two decades, but there's no doubt it's as strong now as it ever was", said Sharon Speedway general manager Dave Willoughby. "You see our guys competing for spots up front everywhere they go, and that even includes out at some of the tougher Central PA tracks."

Each event in 2021 boasts a standardized $12,000 main event purse, bookended by paying $3,000 to win and $250 to start. A full purse breakdown can be found HERE. A lucrative point fund is also being developed with full details being announced at a later date.

In addition to the increased money up for grabs, the 2021 edition of Western PA Sprint Speedweek aids both fans and drivers alike as the entire five-race circuit can be had for just over 250 miles of travel between tracks from start to finish. The immediacy of the host tracks is a huge benefit for all parties involved, and is regarded by both promoters and racers as a major plus.

Michael's Mercer Raceway will kickstart the action with a rare Wednesday night race on June 2nd. Interestingly enough, the only other speedweek event ever held at Mercer also came on a Wednesday as they hosted Night #1 of speedweek back in June of 2000.

Thunder Mountain Speedway will follow up on Thursday night, June 3rd as they'll host their first of two '410 Sprint' shows of the season. This will mark the first visit for '410 Sprints' since the summer of 2019 when Apollo's A.J. Flick was first to the checkers.

Lernerville Speedway's Friday night program will mark the midway point of speedweek when they open the weekend festivities. Not only was "The Action Track" on the schedule for all eight years of the former Western PA Sprint Speedweek ran from 1993-2000, but remarkably they were also able to complete each of their scheduled shows free of rain.

Though Sharon Speedway is located just across the state line in Hartford, OH, the 3/8-mile oval has been a staple on the Western PA circuit since operations at the track began way back in 1929. This race will mark the final tune-up for our local contingent as they prepare for the revered Ohio Speedweek stop just 10 days later.

Western PA Sprint Speedweek will conclude on Sunday night at the Merle Black owned Tri City Raceway Park in Franklin, PA. After a brief hiatus, Black purchased the 1/2-mile speedway in 2020, and brought it roaring back to life while featuring the '410 Sprint Cars' as their premier weekly division.
