Home
2008 Champions Honored

It was “Party Time” on Saturday, November 15th as Sharon Speedway honored the top drivers of the 2008 racing season at the Yankee Lake Ballroom.  Picking up the championship trophies and various other contingency awards in their respective divisions were:

Dan Shetler                            Warren Harley-Davidson 410 Sprint Cars

Dave Murdick                        Gibson-Governor Insurance Agency Modifieds

Alan Dellinger                       Tight-Seal Glass Block Pure Stocks and

Tom’s Sewer and Drain Service E-Mods

Guy Griffin                              Limited Sprints

The top ten drivers in each division also received a plaque commemorating their

performance during the 2008 racing season.  Point fund checks were also

distributed to each of the drivers.

Dale Johnson was honored as the 2008 recipient of the Sharon Speedway Hall of Fame Award.  Johnson, who still lives in Hartford, OH, began his racing career in 1948 driving a silver #13 Ford Coupe.  He drove in the Coupe Division until 1959 when he moved into the Super Modified Division.  During the 1959 season Johnson was a member of the “Three White Mice Team” that also included legendary drivers Gib Orr and Lou Blaney and was owned by Blaney’s father, George.  Following two seasons in the Super Modifieds Johnson moved into the Sprint Division and drove for Dick Neeley until he retired at the end of the 1967 racing season.

Long time Sharon Speedway announcer Jim Pollock was honored as the recipient of the Bill Kirila Award.  The award is presented each year in memory of Mr. Kirila who purchased the speedway in 2002 with Jim Weller Sr. and Dave Blaney.  The award is given to an individual who exemplifies the qualities of loyalty, hard work and a love of family that were an integral part of Mr. Kirila’s life.  Pollock has been a Sharon Speedway employee for well over 20 years.  He has served in several capacities at Sharon Speedway is currently the Track Announcer.  If you need to know anything about the storied history of Sharon Speedway just ask Jim!!

The Hard Luck Award is never one that any driver looks forward to receiving and this year’s “lucky” or should I say “unlucky” recipient is Warren Harley-Davidson Sprint Car Driver Rob Eyler.  Eyler’s season got off to a great start as he picked up his career first wins at both the Lernerville and Sharon Speedways in late May and appeared to be a strong competitor for the divisional points titles at both speedways however a hard crash on July 19th was the first in a series of mechanical problems and on-track incidents that would eliminate Eyler from the divisional title hunt.

The Most Improved Award was presented Warren Harley-Davidson 410 Sprint Champion Dan Shetler.  Shetler finished in the tenth spot of the Sprint Divisional points in 2007.  In 2008 Shetler captured his first ever divisional title piloting the Tom and Fran Chiappelli owned #98 sprinter.  Although Shetler did not capture a feature win at the speedway this season he had ten top ten finishes en-route to the title.  Unfortunately Shetler was released from the Chiappelli Team several weeks after the season had ended and is now looking for a rider for the 2009 season.

Teenager A.J. Albrecht was named the 2008 Sharon Speedway Rookie of the Year.  The likeable youngster had a string of top five finishes in the Limited Sprint Division and is looking to visit Victory Lane in 2009.

The Sharon Speedway “STAR” Employee Award was presented to Joe Danyi.  Danyi, the owner of Youngstown Computer, has gone “above and beyond” to assist the staff and management of Sharon Speedway by developing the Sharon Speedway website and the Sharon Speedway Internet Broadcast, which provides race fans that are unable to make it to the speedway the opportunity to listen the evening’s racing action live on-line.  In addition Danyi created the Sharon Speedway Radio Show that features driver interviews along with race recaps and preview’s each Wednesday evening during the racing season.  Joe, “Thank You for all of your hard work; it is greatly appreciated!”

Speedway Race Director Karl Brest and Speedway owner Jim Weller, Sr. also stated that more than 150 truckloads of clay have been delivered and placed on the speedway in preparation for the 2009 season.  The speedway management is currently working on the 2009 Sharon Speedway schedule and it will be released shortly.

In addition the 2009 Sharon Speedway Season Passes and Speedway Bucks are now on sale.  These items would make great Christmas gifts for the race fans on your gift list so contact Kate or Diane at the Speedway Office to get yours today.

Simply Put... "Thank You For Your Support!!"

The 2008 racing season at the Sharon Speedway is now complete.  The roar of the motors and a pit area full of activity are but a memory.  The “gentle giants” of the racing world have gone into hibernation for the next several months.  As the days get shorter and our thoughts turn to Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas the management of Sharon Speedway would like to take a few moments to extend a sincere “Thank You” to the competitors, car owners, fans and marketing partners who supported the speedway in 2008.

Lewis Captures Apple Festival Nationals ASCS Finale

Despite flipping the night before, nothing was going to deny Trevor Lewis the $3,000 top prize at the Apple Festival Nationals at Sharon, not even a severely worn tire. Lewis, of Upper Black Eddy, PA, became the 11th different driver to win a ASCS Patriot points race this season, leading the final 26 laps to pick up the Sunday Night Victory.

"This is really a team victory and about everyone that works so hard on this car. We have a had a ton of seconds this year and to get the win in this event is just awesome," stated Lewis.

Outside polesitter Jared Zimbardi took the lead on the opening lap from Lewis, but on the first restart of the race on lap five Trevor was able to swing back around the No. 35 and establish himself out in front the rest of the way. But there were some trying moments before he got to lap 30.

A red flag on lap 17 following the flip of Ed Neumister put Zimbardi right on Lewis' tail. After that final restart, Lewis stretched his advantage over the field early on, but as he sliced through lapped traffic, his car began to go away, opening the door for Scott Bonnell to make one last-ditch effort. Bonnell closed the gap on Lewis in the final three laps but would come up just short of the big victory.

One night after flipping on the third lap of the feature and coming back to salvage a fifth place finish on a tacky track, the No. 21 team had to not only make sure that the car was alright to race on Sunday, but they also had to make the necessary changes with a very dry track being presented to complete the weekend.

It was third ASCS Patriot win for Trevor Lewis in his career, with the other two coming at the Bully Hill Nationals at Black Rock. It was also his first feature win this season under any sanction.

With the track taking rubber in the later stages of the feature, the majority of the field was running their fastest laps of the night at the very end of the race, none more so than Scott Bonnell, who used his harder tire to score his second runner-up finish for the weekend. While solid again, Bonnell knew it could have been a win. Bonnell made the pass on Jared Zimbardi with just four laps to go. Justin Barger moved around him just two laps later to round out the podium in third

Barger, who redrew in eighth position for the feature, completely buzzed the tread off his left rear and was happy to see the checkered flag when he did. Zimbardi would fade back to fourth as he nursed his left rear over the final 13 laps after discovering it was already severely worn under the lap 17 red flag. Josh Weller was set to round out the top-five, but coming off of turn four he became the only competitor to blow a tire on the night and slipped to seventh. It was the second night in a row that Weller lost two spots coming off the final corner.

A total of 25 cars would be on hand for the second night of the inaugural Apple Festival Nationals.
